The Kenyan national football team, currently ranked 110th in the world according to FIFA under the management of former Moldova boss Engin Firat, will be aiming to maintain a competitiveness they showed last month at the start of their CAF qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They are and will be reliant on just a few standout names an a couple of those shone over the last few days.

In their aforementioned qualifying matches, Kenya took a first-half lead in Gabon but suffered a narrow defeat before thrashing Seychelles by five goals to nil. One of the key performers from that Seychelles game, national team captain Michael Olunga, was in the thick of the action for his club side.

Olunga notched a brace in that Seychelles victory and he was on the scoresheet the other day for Al Duhail as they came from behind to defeat Iranian Gulf Pro League side, Persepolis, in the group stages of the AFC Champions League. That winning goal did not alter the fact that Christophe Galtier’s Al Duhail finished behind Persepolis at the end of the six-match group stage campaign but did provide a further sign of Olunga’s pedigree.

Over in France, 26-year-old defender Joseph Okumu also shone as he played in the middle of a back three for Stade de Reims. They defeated struggling Strasbourg by two goals to one to maintain their place in the top five and sustain a challenge for European qualification.
